Attendees will learn what to expect from the upcoming Super El Niño, and how it might directly impact your business. This weather pattern is generated by increased heat in the Pacific Ocean and is expected to cause excessive rainfall, powerful winds and higher than normal tides. This program will help you better understand and prepare for what might cost businesses and homeowners thousands of dollars of potential damage.
PRESENTER - Felix Castro - Warning Coordination Meteorologist
As a nationally recognized expert in focusing on public communication and safety, Mr Castro will separate fact from fiction and provide information to help you take actionable steps to keep your business open before disaster strikes during this month long Super El Niño.
Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, I earned a B.S. in Meteorology from Florida State University and a Master of Arts in Environmental Studies from the University of Illinois at Springfield, along with a graduate certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
My NWS career began 21 years ago in 2005 at WFO San Juan, PR. During my time there, I worked through several significant events, including the most impactful event of my career so far: Category 5 Hurricane Maria in 2017. Experiencing the full force and aftermath of such a catastrophic event, including extended power outages across the island, remains a defining moment of my career.
In 2018, I moved to Glasgow, MT (GGW) to expand my experience beyond tropical weather, quickly adapting to temperature extremes ranging from -34°F to 108°F. Three years later, I transitioned to a role as Warning Coordination Meteorologist (WCM) at WFO Hanford, CA. I then joined NWS San Diego as their WCM in April 2026, replacing Alex Tardy, who retired from Federal Service in 2025.
I am fully bilingual in Spanish and English. In my free time, I enjoy traveling the world and visiting National Parks. I am also a competitive chess player who participates in tournaments hosted by the U.S. Chess Federation and the International Chess Federation (FIDE), recently earning the title of Arena Candidate Master (ACM). I currently play at Balboa Park and Oceanside.
